The marina in Agios Kirikos, in the Municipality of Ikaria, has completed its first month of operation on a positive note. According to the numbers, 96 boats docked and 160 overnight stays were made in August, bringing to the Municipality fund a revenue as high as 5.500 euros.

Decision 130/2022 of the Municipality’s Financial Committee and decision 43/2022 by majority vote of the Municipal Council contributed to August’s positive outcome, as they adjusted the boat berthing fees, provided for in a previous decision of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Ikaria (23/2017), which were considered prohibitively expensive for the operation of the tourist boat shelter and its competitiveness in relation to similar shelters of neighboring islands.

Starting the operation of the marina by the Municipality of Ikaria has been imperative for years now. Our basic belief is that the Aghios Kirikos marina is not an income mean, but a way to local growth. In order for it to lead to growth, it needs to be viable, which can only be ensured through competitive prices, attracting boats and visitors to the island, with the respective multiplying benefits for society and local economy.

A more precise picture, acquired within a year of operation, will possibly lead us to a new price adjustment, always aiming at utilizing the marina for the overall benefit of the island and its residents, and not just a portion of people.

Our aim is for the marina to be utilized, and not gradually depreciated.

Nothing should be neglected in this blessed place.

The Aghios Kirikos tourist boat shelter is one of our responsibilities.
