Hebridean Sky: The ferry is scheduled to visit Greece in fall, visiting Katakolo on 9/10, Itea (passing through Korinthos Isthmus in the morning and afternoon route) on 10/10, Nafplio on 11/10, Patmos on 12/10, beautiful Kos on 14/10, and Kastelorizo on 15/10/23.
Island Sky: While relocating from Asia to Northern Europe, the ferry is scheduled to visit Greece this summer, starting with Rhodes and Simi on 8/6, Patmos on 9/6, Syros on 11/6, Nafplio on 12-13/6, Piraeus on 14/6, Itea (after passing through Korinthos Isthmus in the morning) on 15/6, Katakolo on 16/6, Preveza on 17/6, and Corfu on 18/6/23.
Monet: With a capacity of barely 50 passengers, this ferry is scheduled to visit the most destinations in Greece this coming year. It’s scheduled to visit Piraeus 6 times (30-1/5, 11/6, 1/7, 10/7, 12/9 & 2/10), which is considered its basic home port, along with Rhodes. It’s sailing to Folegandros 5 times (12/6, 30/6, 8/7, 13/9 & 1/10), also Sifnos, where it will stay overnight (12-13/6, 29-30/6, 8-9/7, 13-14/9 & 30/9-1/10), Syros (13/6, 28-29/6, 2/7, 14/9 & 29-30/9), Ikaria (14/6, 28/6, 3/7, 15/9 & 29/9), Lipsi and Leros both in the morning and in the afternoon (18/6, 24/6, 4/7, 19/9 & 25/9), Tilos (19-20/6, 22-23/6, 5/7, 20-21/9 & 23-24/9), and incredible Simi (20/6, 22/6, 5/7, 21/9 & 23/9).
The ferry will also sail to Nafplio 4 times (1/6, 11/7, 11/9 & 3/10), Monemvasia (2/6, 12/7, 10/9 & 4/10), Kalamata (3-4/6, 13/7, 9/9 & 5/10), Katakolo (6/6, 14/7, 8/9 & 6/10), Ithaca (7/6, 15/7, 7/9 & 7/10), Samos (15/6, 27/6, 16/9 & 28/9), Patmos (17/6, 25/6, 18/9 & 26/9), and Nisiros (19/6, 23/6, 20/9 & 24/9).
It’s scheduled to pass through Korinthos Isthmus twice (30/5 & 10/6) and visit Itea twice, too (30/5 & 8/6), as well as Rhodes (21/6 & 22/9). Finally, the ferry will only visit the following destinations once this summer: Corfu (28/5), Preveza (29/5), Korinthos (with an overnight stay 9-10/6), Paros (2/7), Fourni (3/7), Halki (6/7), Kasos (7/7) and Milos (9/7/23).

In honor of the day, historian Themistocles Katsaros talked to the attendees (students from Aghios Kirikos High School) about the Ikarian Revolution, and the events leading up to the 17th of July and the forming of the Free State of Ikaria. According to him, those events are also considered the “prelude” for the Balkan Wars and Greece doubling its territory.
The gathering came to a close with a rendering of our National Anthem.

Throughout the fire season (until October 31st) extensive additional checks-patrols are carried out to prevent fires from starting and spreading, but also to verify the compliance with the MANDATORY fire protection measures, mainly in outdoor work. Failure to comply with the above will result in high administrative fines, as well as criminal penalties.

In case you notice a fire:

• Call 199 or 112 IMMEDIATELY and give clear information about:
  – your precise location
  – the precise location and direction of the fire
  – the wind intensity in the area and
  – the type of vegetation on fire
• Leave the area immediately and strictly follow the instructions of the authorities
• Facilitate the access of the Fire Department

“We, the residents signing this request, consider it necessary for you to redesign the transportation coverage for the islands of the North Aegean, and have it modernized to serve the population’s needs, as well as their development prospects.
We think Ikaria should be the transportation hub of the islands of the North Aegean region. Aghios Kirikos’ port, on the south side of the island, can maintain the connection with Fourni and Samos, while Evdilos’ port, on the northern side, beside the connection to Piraeus and Samos, both of which routes should remain, should also add direct connecting routes to Chios and Mytilini.
In other words, we suggest a new route, connecting the ports of Piraeus, Evdilos, Chios and Mytilini, at least twice a week. This route can be carried out by adding Evdilos port, twice a week, on the pre-existing route of “Piraeus – Chios – Mytilini”.
The benefits of such a route for the islands of Ikaria, Chios and Mytilini are bound to be enromous. The locals’ daily life will dramatically change for the better, and it will offer a huge benefit to the economy and social interaction of all the islands of the region. There are only pros and no cons to this route in terms of cost or time, and is absolutely doable, as long as the required political decisions are made. The fact that the ship won’t take too long to get from one port to another upon the addition of Evdilos can be proved through the company’s route boards, from which we can easily calculate the duration of the trip as such: it’s a 6-hour trip from Piraeus to Evdilos, so the trip to Chios would take about 8.5 hours (from Piraeus), and then Mytilini would pretty much stay on the same duration it does with the current route.
Considering this proposal important for our islands’ life and development, we are submitting it to the Regional Council, and request a decision to be made in our favor.”

The sixth research mission of the maritime archaeological research concerns the study and documentation of a shipwreck that dates back to the early Byzantine period in the sea of Fourni. The shipwreck in question is located near Cape Figou, north of the Kamari settlement (east of Fourni) at a depth of 43-58 meters, in a steep and inaccessible area, where strong winds blow almost all year round. The research was supported by a staff of 25 divers from different specialties (archaeologists, architects, antiquities conservators, professional divers, photographers, filmmakers, undergraduate and postgraduate students). As part of the research, a total of 292 individual dives were carried out, which corresponds to approximately 220 hours of work on the seabed.

Dr. Koutsouflakis, native of Ikaria, said the research began on 2015, when the first 21 shipwrecks were discovered, and Manos Mytikas, Vice President of the “Korseai” Foundation, on his own initiative informed the authorities about the existence of the shipwrecks at bottom of the sea of Fourni, and with great effort directed the scientific interest to our waters.
In 2016, the team returned much stronger, and in 2021 the new data from the researches, now listing 58 shipwrecks in the Fourni archipelago, were presented. Of all the newfound shipwrecks, they chose the one that attracted the most scientific interest, both because of their integrity, and because of the cargo carried by the wrecked ship which, according to the research, carried six different types of amphora, which come from the Crimea region (today’s Ukraine) and Herakleia of the Pontus on the Black Sea. The unearthed table pottery was particularly enlightening, in terms of the more precise chronological inclusion of this wreck, which can now be safely dated between 480 and 520 AD, probably during the reign of Emperor Anastasios I (491-518 AD), of the Leon Dynasty, known from historiographical sources mainly for his fiscal and monetary reforms, which strengthened the state coffers and allowed the expansionist policy of the emperors of the 6th century.
Earlier research had focused on the perimeter cleaning of part of the wreck and a test cut, in order to develop the stratigraphy of the shipwreck. 15 buried amphorae were uncovered in that research, including a type of amphora attributed to the city of Sinope on the Black Sea, a number of tableware and wood fragments attributed to the ship skeleton, which probably survived in the sand bed under the wreck’s load.

In parallel with the test sections on the wreck, actions were taken to document other shipwrecks in Fourni, within the framework of the European Cross-Border Cooperation Program “Interreg VA Greece – Cyprus 2014-2020” – “Diving Itineraries in Marine Protected Areas of the Eastern Mediterranean – Development of a Diving Tourism Network (De. Di. Tou. N.) (Αν. Δι. Κα. Τ.)
The collected research data is considered extremely important for organizing the systematic excavation of the wreck in the near future.
The benefits for the local community are equally great, with the further strengthening of tourism, the creation of a school for the training of scuba divers – archaeologists who will participate in the research and practise on the wrecks, and the creation of a coastal land museum, in which the findings of the wrecks will be placed.
The research was financially and logistically supported by the Municipality of Fourni Korseon, the European Program “Interreg Greece – Cyprus 2014-2020 De.Di.Tou.N. (Αν. Δι. Κα. Τ.), the “Korseai” Foundation, the Explorers Club Foundation, and the companies “Hellenic Seaways”, “Blue Star Ferries”, “Seiko Japan” and “Scubapro USA”. The researches were supported by the Mayor of Fourni Korseon, mr Dimitrios Karidis, the staff of the Fourni Port Station, and Alexandros Schwarzenberg, all of which we’d like to thank.
